Radiation Effects Engineer

Responsibilites: The Radiation Effects Engineer implements the ionizing radiation control plan for space programs. This includes understanding electronic component applications within a design and then determining, by the review of radiation effects data &/or experimental test, if each component meets program objectives and customer reqirements from a radiation effects perspective. This position requires for the radiation effects engineer to interact effectively with design and component engineering staff.

Experience: At least 3 years of relevant radiation effects engineering experience to include the analysis of both single event effects and total ionizing dose in digital and/or analog electronic components.

At least 2 years of relevant hands-on experience in performing experimental measurements of one or more of the following for electronic components:

1) SEE effects with heavy ion, proton, and/or neutron beams.

2) TID/ELDRS effects

At least 1 year of experience with the calculation of on-orbit SEE upset rates via Creme96, Space Radiation, or an equivalent tool.

Reliability and/or EEE Component Engineering experience a plus

Education: B.S. or graduate degree in electrical engineering, physics, or other applicable engineering discipline.

 

Laser Systems Engineer

Candidates for the Laser Systems Engineer position will have experience leading and performing technical activities on programs involving laser weapon, illuminator, and/or communication systems. Candidates should possess solid technical credentials in the field of optical engineering or optical physics and have excellent communication skills and demonstrated leadership ability. In addition to optical domain knowledge, the successful candidate will have experience in executing the following systems engineering processes on laser programs:

The Laser and Optical Products Department is responsible for providing engineering support to a variety of laser and electro-optical payload programs. Laser programs are dominated by high-energy chemical and solid-state laser technology. This hardware focused group supports product development throughout all phases of a program. Our department also conducts integration and testing of high-energy laser systems at our Capistrano Test Site (CTS), just 60 miles south of Space Park. In addition, low absorption measurements are made at our Precision Metrology Facility at CTS. The Laser and Optical Products Department also has an Optical Fabrication Shop that does both mirror polishing and optical metrology. Additional areas of responsibility include diagnostics design, fabrication and test, and astronomical and infrared systems. Typical responsibilities include: Hardware specification: procurement support for IR and visible optical components and coatings; technical oversight of optical component manufacturing; and interfacing with vendors. Requirements definition: assistance with generating power, wavefront error, alignment, efficiency, and polarization budgets; assistance with EQ and drawing spec development; and performing error budgets. Hardware assembly: optical assembly; bonding; and alignment. Performance testing and analysis: testing to space qualify components; data acquisition; and analysis of performance data. Technical procedure development, planning, and documentation. Design and operation of diagnostics to measure temporal power, beam pointing, temporal and wavelength spectral content. Data acquisition and analysis of performance data. Education: BS, MS Optics BS, MS Physics, with concentration in Optics may be accepted. Required Skills: The successful candidate will have: excellent written and communication skills; the desire and ability to work with a team; be flexible, self motivated, and confident; and be willing to learn new skills and disciplines. Experience with optical system design, assembly, and alignment. Knowledge of physical optics and wavefront control. Knowledge of materials and material properties such as birefringence, Desired skills: Desired skills include data analysis, programming and numerical analysis of data using Matlab, MathCAD, Mathematica or equivalent and Optical design experience using Zemax or Code V. Ability to implement data acquisition and control systems (LabVIEW or equivalent).
